Isaac H. Ferguson

Isaac H. Ferguson - (About 1776 - January 1, 1848) was the first settler of Marine Township, Illinois, Ferguson moved to Texas in 1846 and at the age of 70 became a company commander of Rusk County, Texas to fight in the Mexican-American War. He is credited as being the oldest company commander in the Mexican War. Ferguson died in Mexico City on January 1, 1848. He was succeeded by his second in command, First Lieutenant Ephraim M. Daggett.
Isaac was buried in Mexico City with a United States flag draped around him. A bill sent to his widow, Elizabeth, translated from Spanish, says "In the City of Mexico, January 3, 1848, died the Seňor, Capt. Isaac Ferguson, and in order to bury him, I made a casket the value of the lumber and iron ornaments (hardware), eight pesos ($4) and six reales (75c) and also four reales of lumber to cover the casket and six more to launder his clothes." Signed, Marcos Villa
